Hip-Hop 4 Flint Newark Led by Doitall of the Lords of the Underground Gathers the Hip-Hop Community on April 2nd to Raise Funds to Aid the Flint Water Crisis and Raise Awareness of Lead in the City of Newark Saturday, April 2, 2016 the City of Newark, New Jersey will host the closing event for Hip-Hop 4 Flint Newark, a one-of-a-kind global initiative, bringing together the hip-hop community with non-profit partner Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church based in Flint, MI to raise funds in support of the Flint Water Crisis. Hip-Hop 4 Flint will take place in 37 cities around the world joining artists, community leaders, youth, activists, educators, and press through the medium of hip-hop to raise $80k to purchase high quality water filtration systems for 250 households in Flint, MI. This initiative is being led nationally by YoNasDa Lonewolf, emcee, published writer, and activist who focuses her work on human rights, indigenous rights, and social justice. She was the creator of Hip-Hop 4 Haiti, and an executive committee member of the Justice or Else! 20th Anniversary of the Million Man March, which was led by the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan. The Newark, NJ event will take place on April 2, 2016 from 2-5pm at the historic Robert Treat Hotel Pennsylvania Ballroom located at 50 Park Place and is being co-organized by Du “Doitall” Kelly of the legendary Lords of the Underground and 211 Community Impact and Marcy DePina, President and CEO of FORSA Media Group and Program Director of Newark Riverfront Revival. Fundraising efforts for the City of Newark will kick off this Friday, March 18th from 8pm-12am with an "Open Mic 4 Flint" taking place at Source of Knowledge Bookstore, located at 867 Broad Street. All proceeds from this event will go toward the #HipHop4Flint Newark donation. The fundraiser on April 2nd will combine the 5 elements of hip-hop with local, national and international artists including Du “Doitall” Kelly of the Legendary Lords of the Underground, Rahzel the Beatboxer, Rhymageddon, Urban Kween, GalleryRetail, Negros Americanos, Miss Nana, NeNe Ali, Young Bonez, Sol Zalez, Queen Mother Iya Imakhu, E the Elite, Lokii Jay, DJ Express, DJ Scotty Nevers, Dynamic Dynasty, and special guests. The event will also be streamed online via UStream and broadcast through media partners allhiphop.com, HipHopDX and Stagehound TV. This fundraiser will be hosted in partnership with the City of Newark: Health and Wellness Department, Water Commission and Youth Ambassadors, Newark Riverfront Revival, 211 Community Impact, GrassROOTS Community Foundation, Newark Office of Film + TV, Hycide Magazine, The Newark Times, Essex County College Urban Issues Institute, Ironbound Community Corporation, Source of Knowledge Bookstore, Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey, Lincoln Park Coastal Community Development, Dynomyte Films, EMQ Entertainment, and the New Jersey Environmental Alliance. The goal is to use the powerful universal platform of hip-hop to raise funds for Flint, MI and to educate and engage Newark citizens in conversations about environmental pressures in our city and lead poisoning in particular. Hip-Hop 4 Flint is also being supported nationally by the following artist organizations: Raheem DaVaughn’s LoveLife Organization, the Lupe Fiasco Foundation, Justice League of NYC, Unite or Die, and the Hip Hop Caucus. In 2014, while the city was under the control of a state appointment emergency manager, the city switched its water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River. The city saw a sharp increase in lead levels that were well above the EPA’s standards of safety, exposing the city’s 9,000 children to water that was classified as toxic waste. This city deemed the water unfit for consumption and declared a citywide state of emergency. The water supply was switched back to Lake Huron, but the toxic water had already caused damage to the city’s pipelines and population and has had devastating effects to the health of residents. #HipHop4Flint Newark is harnessing the power and strength of hip-hop culture around the world to bring together the community like no other, because Hip-Hop is UNIVERSAL and to teach to each is what rap intended!
